Measurement of mitral valve area
Posted by: Johnson Francis on: 20 Sep, 2009
Mitral valve area (2-D) is measured in:
a. Apical four chamber view
b. Parasternal short axis view
c. Parasternal long axis view
d. Supra sternal view
Answer: b
Parasternal short axis view gives a good cross section of the mitral valve. The smallest full circle is visualised and the area measured using planimetry with the computerised online callipers. An alternate method for estimation of mitral valve area is from the pressure half time of the mitral Doppler flow, which is done from the apical four chamber view.
